Library Experience

Today I took the kids to the library to get some new books.  Dylan loves the library because they have a never-ending selection of dinosaur books.  There was a class of mentally disabled teenagers who were there reading, many of them by the children's books.  One boy introduced himself to me.  His name was Phillip.  He kept asking me who my kids were and when he found out I had two boys he told me how lucky I was because he has two sisters that are always bothering him.  It was so cute!  Dylan showed him how many books we had in our basket and told him that most of them were dinosaur books.  Phillip thought that was pretty cool. It was the sweetest thing ever.  I'm sure Dylan didn't even realize that intellectually Phillip was probably only about 6 years old, although he was physically around 15.  To Dylan all that mattered is that he was a boy who was interested in him and willing to listen to how much he liked dinosaurs.  And everything that Dylan said he liked, the boy agreed with.  Phillip told Dylan he really like fire trucks and Dylan said, "Yeah, they're pretty q-el (that's how he says cool)."  Dylan brought him a book and said, "Look at this dinosaur book I'm getting today." With a look of true appreciation, Phillip responded with, "Wow, that's great."  Oh how sweet it was for me to watch the interaction.  Both innocent souls connecting and caring about what the other had to say, not just trying to shut the other up or hurry along because there was no time to talk.  Even when we went to check out, Dylan was commenting about the older boy that was talking to him. It was truly a precious moment that I hope I never forget.
